We count it an honor to serve God as doorkeepers, a job that the psalmist wrote about, which declares his pleasure in serving. "I'd rather be a doorkeeper in the house of the Lord, than dwell in the tents of the wicked."
The first usher board of Mesquite Friendship Baptist Church was formed in 1992 in our original location at John West and LaPrada with one usher. Since that time our board has grown, and we now have three active boards.
Our Juniors are from ages 5-12, Youth 13-17 and Seniors 18 and up.
The Youth Ushers are on post 4th Saturday @ 11am.
As of this year, there are 43 active ushers serving, under the leadership of Sis. Sheila McGhee, President. We thank God for our past presidents, whose contributions have help move this board forward to become the talented, versatile, dynamic ministry it is today. Our past presidents include Sis Vilora Williams, Sis. Linnie Collins, Sis. Shelia McGhee, Sis. Pamela Jones, and Bro. Jerry Hannon. Our President Emeritus is our very own Mother Florence Walker, who continues to be a Blessing to us from her wheelchair. She exemplifies true faith as she attends church and praises God. This year we are honored to have added many new ushers to our roll.
Our children and youth serve on each 4th Sunday. Our Juniors work under the direction of Sis. Vilora Williams and Sis. Dawnette Dukes; our youth work under the direction of Sis. Madelynn Mitchell and yours truly. We commend the children and youth for there commitment & dedication to serve the Lord.
When asked what the duties of an usher are, many would say we are here primarily to open the doors and seat people. That is just our beginning. Here, at MFBC, we pride ourselves on being true servants. Our service starts in the Foyer, with our greeters. This person is here to assist your initial entrance into the Sanctuary. After entering the Sanctuary, there is a staff of ushers placed throughout the building to serve you. This may require that we direct traffic, help to quiet our excited little ones, provide assistance to our Pastor, and to make room in a crowded sanctuary. Thank you for how cooperative you are when we ask you assistance during these times. We are sanctioned to keep order....with smiles on our faces. We do not only serve in our local congregation, but accompany our Pastor on outings. In one of his trademark sermons, last year, Pastor Turner proclaimed that when he gets to Heaven, he wants to see the MFBC Ushers opening the pearly gates for him. With a pastor who thinks so highly of us, we are happy and honored to serve under his leadership. And because we are a multi talented board, we have sang, led praise and worship, danced, and continue to look for new opportunities to serve in our church. You'll find that many of our usher are much more than just ushers. We have ushers participating in many other ministries in the church such as Sisterhood, Brotherhood, Outreach Evangelism, Young Adult Ministry, Track Mom's and the Prayer Force. Yes, we are a diversified group but we function as a family as well. And in each family there are good times and challenges, but because we love each other, we pray for each other, and we enjoy our fellowship with each other.
The MFBC ushers are striving for perfection through Christ Jesus. This is our day to celebrate the goodness of God toward the usher boards at MFBC. We are TRULY BLESSED. We are dedicated to service, and happy to answer the call as Isaiah did, Here am I, send me.
